Role description:We are seeking a Researcher with a strong background in Physics or Geophysics and scientific programming, and a passion for developing subsurface characterization technologies that improve how seismic data are transformed into quantitative subsurface models. You will play a key role in the continued development and expansion of Delft Inversion’s technology portfolio. The position involves research focused on 1.5D elastic wave-equation–based inversion, as well as related technologies relevant to seismic reservoir characterization and AVO inversion. In this role, you will work closely with the company’s operations and software development teams, ensuring a strong link between research, implementation, and practical application. During the onboarding phase, regular in-person meetings at our Delft office will be required with key members of the team. Thereafter, Delft Inversion supports a remote-first working culture, with most work performed in a distributed environment. Key Responsibilities:- Develop, formalize, and document theoretical frameworks for 1.5D elastic wave-equation–based seismic inversion- Implement and maintain these frameworks in Python, following best practices in scientific software development- Test, validate, and benchmark methodologies using synthetic and field seismic data- Publish research outcomes in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and relevant industry outlets- Represent the company in the technical programs of international conferences, workshops, and scientific meetings- Monitor and assess developments in seismic reservoir characterization and contribute to shaping and refining the company’s research agenda- Report directly to the company’s technical management Requirements:- PhD in Physics, Geophysics, or a closely related field- 3–5+ years of professional research experience, including PhD research- Genuine interest in fundamental research with real-world applications- Excellent proficiency in scientific programming with Python- Strong theoretical background in acoustic and elastic wave equations- Strong affinity with numerical methods and inverse problems- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English- Self-motivated, quality-driven, and comfortable working independently as well as in distributed, multidisciplinary teams- Beneficial: Eligibility to live and work in the European Union Why join us:- Contribute to cutting-edge technology used in some of the most exciting fields of the energy transition.- Work in a small, agile team with real ownership and impact.- Flexible, remote-first culture with a focus on work-life balance.- Opportunities for growth, learning, and travel.
